سَأَلَ سَآئِلُۢ بِعَذَابٍ وَاقِعٍ١

сəəлə сəə'илюмм-би'əз̃əəбиу-вəəќи'

An asker asked for a punishment sure to befall

لِّلْكَـٰفِرِينَ لَيْسَ لَهُۥ دَافِعٌ٢

ли-ль-кəəфириинə лэйсə лəhу дəəфи'

—which none can avert from the faithless —

مِّنَ ٱللَّهِ ذِى ٱلْمَعَارِجِ٣

минə ллаhи з̃ииль-мə'əəридж

from Allah, Lord of the lofty stations.

تَعْرُجُ ٱلْمَلَـٰٓئِكَةُ وَٱلرُّوحُ إِلَيْهِ فِى يَوْمٍ كَانَ مِقْدَارُهُۥ خَمْسِينَ أَلْفَ سَنَةٍ٤

тə'руджуль-мəлəə'икəту вə ррууhу илəйhи фии йəумин кəəнə миќдəəруhу хōмсиинə əльфə сəнəh

The angels and the Spirit ascend to Him in a day whose span is fifty thousand years.

فَٱصْبِرْ صَبْرًا جَمِيلاً٥

фəəсбир сōбрōн джəмиилə

So be patient, with a patience that is graceful.

إِنَّهُمْ يَرَوْنَهُۥ بَعِيدًا٦

иннəhум йəрōунəhу бə'иидə

Indeed they see it to be far off,

وَنَرَٮٰهُ قَرِيبًا٧

вəнəрōōhу ќōриибə

and We see it to be near.

يَوْمَ تَكُونُ ٱلسَّمَآءُ كَٱلْمُهْلِ٨

йəумə тəкууну ссəмəə'у кəəльмуhль

The day when the sky will be like molten copper,

وَتَكُونُ ٱلْجِبَالُ كَٱلْعِهْنِ٩

вəтəкуунуль-джибəəлю кəəль'иhн

and the mountains like [tufts of] dyed wool,

وَلَا يَسْــَٔلُ حَمِيمٌ حَمِيمًا١٠

вəлəə йəсəлю həмиимун həмиимə

and no friend will inquire about [the welfare of his] friend,

يُبَصَّرُونَهُمْ‌ۚ يَوَدُّ ٱلْمُجْرِمُ لَوْ يَفْتَدِى مِنْ عَذَابِ يَوْمِئِذِۭ بِبَنِيهِ١١

йубəссōруунəhум, йəвəддуль-муджриму лəу йəфтəдии мин 'əз̃əəби йəуми'из̃имм-бибəнииh

[though] they will be placed within each other’s sight. The guilty one will wish he could ransom himself from the punishment of that day at the price of his children,

وَصَـٰحِبَتِهِۦ وَأَخِيهِ١٢

вəсōōhибəтиhи вəəхыыh

his spouse and his brother,

وَفَصِيلَتِهِ ٱلَّتِى تُــْٔوِيهِ١٣

вəфəсыылəтиhи льлəтии ту'вииh

his kin, which had sheltered him

وَمَن فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ جَمِيعًا ثُمَّ يُنجِيهِ١٤

вəмəӈ-фииль-əрды джəмии'əн c̃уммə йуӈджииh

and all those who are upon the earth, if that might deliver him.

كَلَّآ‌ۖ إِنَّهَا لَظَىٰ١٥

кəльлəə, иннəhəə лəз̃ōō

Never! Indeed, it is a blazing fire,

نَزَّاعَةً لِّلشَّوَىٰ١٦

нəззəə'əтəл-лиш-шəвəə

which strips away the scalp.

تَدْعُواْ مَنْ أَدْبَرَ وَتَوَلَّىٰ١٧

тəд'уу мəн əдбəрō вəтəвəльлəə

It invites him, who has turned back [from the truth] and forsaken [it],

وَجَمَعَ فَأَوْعَىٰٓ١٨

вəджəмə'ə фəəу'əə

amassing [wealth] and hoarding [it].

إِنَّ ٱلْإِنسَـٰنَ خُلِقَ هَلُوعًا١٩

иннəль-иӈсəəнə хулиќō həлюю'ə

Indeed man has been created covetous:

إِذَا مَسَّهُ ٱلشَّرُّ جَزُوعًا٢٠

из̃əə мəссəhу шшəрру джəзуу'ə

anxious when an ill befalls him

وَإِذَا مَسَّهُ ٱلْخَيْرُ مَنُوعًا٢١

вəиз̃əə мəссəhуль-хōйру мəнуу'ə

and grudging [charity] when good comes his way

إِلَّا ٱلْمُصَلِّينَ٢٢

ильлəəль-мусōллиин

—[all are such] except the prayerful,

ٱلَّذِينَ هُمْ عَلَىٰ صَلَاتِهِمْ دَآئِمُونَ٢٣

əль-лəз̃иинə hум 'əлəə сōлəəтиhим дəə'имуун

those who persevere in their prayers

وَٱلَّذِينَ فِىٓ أَمْوَٲلِهِمْ حَقٌّ مَّعْلُومٌ٢٤

вəль-лəз̃иинə фии əмвəəлиhим həќќумм-мə'лююм

and there is a known share in whose wealth

لِّلسَّآئِلِ وَٱلْمَحْرُومِ٢٥

лис-сəə'или вəəльмəhруум

for the beggar and the deprived,

وَٱلَّذِينَ يُصَدِّقُونَ بِيَوْمِ ٱلدِّينِ٢٦

вəль-лəз̃иинə йусōддиќуунə бийəумид-диин

and who affirm the Day of Retribution,

وَٱلَّذِينَ هُم مِّنْ عَذَابِ رَبِّهِم مُّشْفِقُونَ٢٧

вəль-лəз̃иинə hум-мин 'əз̃əəби рōббиhим-мушфиќуун

and those who are apprehensive of the punishment of their Lord

إِنَّ عَذَابَ رَبِّهِمْ غَيْرُ مَأْمُونٍ٢٨

иннə 'əз̃əəбə рōббиhим ґōйру мəмуун

(there is indeed no security from the punishment of their Lord)

وَٱلَّذِينَ هُمْ لِفُرُوجِهِمْ حَـٰفِظُونَ٢٩

вəль-лəз̃иинə hум лифурууджиhим həəфиз̃уун

and those who guard their private parts

إِلَّا عَلَىٰٓ أَزْوَٲجِهِمْ أَوْ مَا مَلَكَتْ أَيْمَـٰنُهُمْ فَإِنَّهُمْ غَيْرُ مَلُومِينَ٣٠

ильлəə 'əлəə əзвəəджиhим əу мəə мəлəкəт əймəəнуhум фəиннəhум ґōйру мəлююмиин

(apart from their spouses and their slave women, for then they are not blameworthy;

فَمَنِ ٱبْتَغَىٰ وَرَآءَ ذَٲلِكَ فَأُوْلَـٰٓئِكَ هُمُ ٱلْعَادُونَ٣١

фəмəни-бтəґōō вəрōō'ə з̃əəликə фəуулəə'икə hумуль-'əəдуун

but whoever seeks beyond that—it is they who are the transgressors)

وَٱلَّذِينَ هُمْ لِأَمَـٰنَـٰتِهِمْ وَعَهْدِهِمْ رَٲعُونَ٣٢

вəль-лəз̃иинə hум лиəмəəнəəтиhим вə'əhдиhим рōō'уун

and those who keep their trusts and covenants,

وَٱلَّذِينَ هُم بِشَهَـٰدَٲتِهِمْ قَآئِمُونَ٣٣

вəль-лəз̃иинə hумм-бишəhəəдəəтиhим ќōō'имуун

and those who are observant of their testimonies,

وَٱلَّذِينَ هُمْ عَلَىٰ صَلَاتِهِمْ يُحَافِظُونَ٣٤

вəль-лəз̃иинə hум 'əлəə сōлəəтиhим йуhəəфиз̃уун

and those who are watchful of their prayers.

أُوْلَـٰٓئِكَ فِى جَنَّـٰتٍ مُّكْرَمُونَ٣٥

уулəə'икə фии джəннəəтимм-мукрōмуун

They will be in gardens, held in honour.

فَمَالِ ٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُواْ قِبَلَكَ مُهْطِعِينَ٣٦

фəмəəли льлəз̃иинə кəфəруу ќибəлəкə муhт̣ы'иин

What is the matter with the faithless that they scramble toward you,

عَنِ ٱلْيَمِينِ وَعَنِ ٱلشِّمَالِ عِزِينَ٣٧

'əниль-йəмиини вə'əни шшимəəли 'изиин

from left and right, in groups?

أَيَطْمَعُ كُلُّ ٱمْرِىٍٕ مِّنْهُمْ أَن يُدْخَلَ جَنَّةَ نَعِيمٍ٣٨

əйəт̣мə'у куллю-мри'имм-минhум əй-йудхōлə джəннəтə нə'иим

Does each man among them hope to enter the garden of bliss?

كَلَّآ‌ۖ إِنَّا خَلَقْنَـٰهُم مِّمَّا يَعْلَمُونَ٣٩

кəльлəə, иннəə хōлəќнəəhум-миммəə йə'лəмуун

Never! Indeed, We created them from what they know.

فَلَآ أُقْسِمُ بِرَبِّ ٱلْمَشَـٰرِقِ وَٱلْمَغَـٰرِبِ إِنَّا لَقَـٰدِرُونَ٤٠

фəлəə уќсиму бирōббиль-мəшəəриќи вəəльмəґōōриби иннəə лəќōōдируун

So I swear by the Lord of the easts and the wests that We are able

عَلَىٰٓ أَن نُّبَدِّلَ خَيْرًا مِّنْهُمْ وَمَا نَحْنُ بِمَسْبُوقِينَ٤١

'əлəə əн-нубəддилə хōйрōмм-минhум вəмəə нəhну бимəсбууќиин

to replace them with [others] better than them and We are not to be outmaneuvered.

فَذَرْهُمْ يَخُوضُواْ وَيَلْعَبُواْ حَتَّىٰ يُلَـٰقُواْ يَوْمَهُمُ ٱلَّذِى يُوعَدُونَ٤٢

фəз̃əрhум йəхуудуу вəйəль'əбуу həттəə йулəəќуу йəумəhуму льлəз̃ии йуу'əдуун

So leave them to gossip and play till they encounter the day they are promised:

يَوْمَ يَخْرُجُونَ مِنَ ٱلْأَجْدَاثِ سِرَاعًا كَأَنَّهُمْ إِلَىٰ نُصُبٍ يُوفِضُونَ٤٣

йəумə йəхруджуунə минəль-əдждəəc̃и сирōō'əн кəəннəhум илəə нусубий-йууфидуун

the day when they emerge from graves, hastening, as if racing toward a target,

خَـٰشِعَةً أَبْصَـٰرُهُمْ تَرْهَقُهُمْ ذِلَّةٌ‌ۚ ذَٲلِكَ ٱلْيَوْمُ ٱلَّذِى كَانُواْ يُوعَدُونَ٤٤

хōōши'əтəн əбсōōруhум тəрhəќуhум з̃ильлəh, з̃əəликəль-йəуму льлəз̃ии кəəнуу йуу'əдуун

with a humbled look [in their eyes], overcast by abasement. That is the day they had been promised.
