Maaarij (Ascending Stairways)

  • بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَـٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ

    бисмиль-лəhир-рōhмəəнир-рōhиим

    In the Name of Allah, the All-beneficent, the All-merciful.
  • 70:1

    سَأَلَ سَائِلٌ بِعَذَابٍ وَاقِعٍ

    сə`əлə сəə`илюмм-би'əз̃əəбиу-вəəќи'

    An asker asked for a punishment sure to befall
  • 70:2

    لِّلْكَافِرِينَ لَيْسَ لَهُ دَافِعٌ

    ли-ль-кəəфириинə лэйсə лəhу дəəфи'

    —which none can avert from the faithless —
  • 70:3

    مِّنَ اللَّهِ ذِي الْمَعَارِجِ

    минəл-лаhи з̃ииль-мə'əəридж

    from Allah, Lord of the lofty stations.
  • 70:4

    تَعْرُجُ الْمَلَائِكَةُ وَالرُّوحُ إِلَيْهِ فِي يَوْمٍ كَانَ مِقْدَارُهُ خَمْسِينَ أَلْفَ سَنَةٍ

    тə'руджуль-мəлəə`икəту вəр-рууhу илəйhи фии йəумин кəəнə миќдəəруhу хōмсиинə əльфə сəнəh

    The angels and the Spirit ascend to Him in a day whose span is fifty thousand years.
  • 70:5

    فَاصْبِرْ صَبْرًا جَمِيلًا

    фəəсбир сōбрōн джəмиилə

    So be patient, with a patience that is graceful.
  • 70:6

    إِنَّهُمْ يَرَوْنَهُ بَعِيدًا

    иннəhум йəрōунəhу бə'иидə

    Indeed they see it to be far off,
  • 70:7

    وَنَرَاهُ قَرِيبًا

    вəнəрōōhу ќōриибə

    and We see it to be near.
  • 70:8

    يَوْمَ تَكُونُ السَّمَاءُ كَالْمُهْلِ

    йəумə тəкуунус-сəмəə`у кəəльмуhль

    The day when the sky will be like molten copper,
  • 70:9

    وَتَكُونُ الْجِبَالُ كَالْعِهْنِ

    вəтəкуунуль-джибəəлю кəəль'иhн

    and the mountains like [tufts of] dyed wool,
  • 70:10

    وَلَا يَسْأَلُ حَمِيمٌ حَمِيمًا

    вəлəə йəс`əлю həмиимун həмиимə

    and no friend will inquire about [the welfare of his] friend,
  • 70:11

    يُبَصَّرُونَهُمْ  ۚ يَوَدُّ الْمُجْرِمُ لَوْ يَفْتَدِي مِنْ عَذَابِ يَوْمِئِذٍ بِبَنِيهِ

    йубəссōруунəhум, йəвəддуль-муджриму лəу йəфтəдии мин 'əз̃əəби йəуми`из̃имм-бибəнииh

    [though] they will be placed within each other’s sight. The guilty one will wish he could ransom himself from the punishment of that day at the price of his children,
  • 70:12

    وَصَاحِبَتِهِ وَأَخِيهِ

    вəсōōhибəтиhи вə`əхыыh

    his spouse and his brother,
  • 70:13

    وَفَصِيلَتِهِ الَّتِي تُؤْوِيهِ

    вəфəсыылəтиhиль-лəтии ту`вииh

    his kin, which had sheltered him
  • 70:14

    وَمَن فِي الْأَرْضِ جَمِيعًا ثُمَّ يُنجِيهِ

    вəмəŋŋ-фииль-əрды джəмии'əн c̃уммə йуŋŋджииh

    and all those who are upon the earth, if that might deliver him.
  • 70:15

    كَلَّا  ۖ إِنَّهَا لَظَىٰ

    кəльлəə, иннəhəə лəз̃ōō

    Never! Indeed, it is a blazing fire,
  • 70:16

    نَزَّاعَةً لِّلشَّوَىٰ

    нəззəə'əтəл-лиш-шəвəə

    which strips away the scalp.
  • 70:17

    تَدْعُو مَنْ أَدْبَرَ وَتَوَلَّىٰ

    тəд'уу мəн əдбəрō вəтəвəльлəə

    It invites him, who has turned back [from the truth] and forsaken [it],
  • 70:18

    وَجَمَعَ فَأَوْعَىٰ

    вəджəмə'ə фə`əу'əə

    amassing [wealth] and hoarding [it].
  • 70:19

     ۞ إِنَّ الْإِنسَانَ خُلِقَ هَلُوعًا

    иннəль-иŋŋсəəнə хулиќō həлюю'ə

    Indeed man has been created covetous:
  • 70:20

    إِذَا مَسَّهُ الشَّرُّ جَزُوعًا

    из̃əə мəссəhуш-шəрру джəзуу'ə

    anxious when an ill befalls him
