surah053

وَٱلنَّجْمِ إِذَا هَوَىٰ١

вə ннəджми из̃əə həвəə

By the star when it sets:

مَا ضَلَّ صَاحِبُكُمْ وَمَا غَوَىٰ٢

мəə дōльлə сōōhибукум вəмəə ґōвəə

your companion has neither gone astray, nor amiss.

وَمَا يَنطِقُ عَنِ ٱلْهَوَىٰٓ٣

вəмəə йəӈт̣ыќу 'əниль-həвəə

Nor does he speak out of [his own] desire:

إِنْ هُوَ إِلَّا وَحْىٌ يُوحَىٰ٤

ин hувə ильлəə вəhйуй-йууhəə

it is just a revelation that is revealed [to him],

عَلَّمَهُۥ شَدِيدُ ٱلْقُوَىٰ٥

'əльлəмəhу шəдиидуль-ќувəə

taught him by one of great powers,

ذُو مِرَّةٍ فَٱسْتَوَىٰ٦

з̃уу миррōтин фəəстəвəə

possessed of sound judgement. He settled,

وَهُوَ بِٱلْأُفُقِ ٱلْأَعْلَىٰ٧

вəhувə биль-уфуќиль-ə'лəə

while he was on the highest horizon.

ثُمَّ دَنَا فَتَدَلَّىٰ٨

c̃уммə дəнəə фəтəдəльлəə

Then he drew nearer and nearer

فَكَانَ قَابَ قَوْسَيْنِ أَوْ أَدْنَىٰ٩

фəкəəнə ќōōбə ќōусəйни əу əднəə

until he was within two bows’ length or even nearer,

فَأَوْحَىٰٓ إِلَىٰ عَبْدِهِۦ مَآ أَوْحَىٰ١٠

фəəуhəə илəə 'əбдиhи мəə əуhəə

whereat He revealed to His servant whatever He revealed.

مَا كَذَبَ ٱلْفُؤَادُ مَا رَأَىٰٓ١١

мəə кəз̃əбəль-фу'əəду мəə рōəə

The heart did not deny what it saw.

أَفَتُمَـٰرُونَهُۥ عَلَىٰ مَا يَرَىٰ١٢

əфəтумəəруунəhу 'əлəə мəə йəрōō

Will you then dispute with him about what he saw?!

وَلَقَدْ رَءَاهُ نَزْلَةً أُخْرَىٰ١٣

вəлəќōд рō'əəhу нəзлəтəн ухрōō

Certainly he saw it yet another time,

عِندَ سِدْرَةِ ٱلْمُنتَهَىٰ١٤

'иӈдə сидрōтиль-муӈтəhəə

by the Lote Tree of the Ultimate Boundary,

عِندَهَا جَنَّةُ ٱلْمَأْوَىٰٓ١٥

'иӈдəhəə джəннəтуль-мəвəə

near which is the Garden of the Abode,

إِذْ يَغْشَى ٱلسِّدْرَةَ مَا يَغْشَىٰ١٦

из̃ йəґшəə ссидрōтə мəə йəґшəə

when there covered the Lote Tree what covered it.

مَا زَاغَ ٱلْبَصَرُ وَمَا طَغَىٰ١٧

мəə зəəґōль-бəсōру вəмəə т̣ōґōō

His gaze did not swerve, nor did it overstep the bounds.

لَقَدْ رَأَىٰ مِنْ ءَايَـٰتِ رَبِّهِ ٱلْكُبْرَىٰٓ١٨

лəќōд рōəə мин əəйəəти рōббиhиль-кубрōō

Certainly he saw some of the greatest signs of his Lord.

أَفَرَءَيْتُمُ ٱللَّـٰتَ وَٱلْعُزَّىٰ١٩

əфəрōəйтуму льлəəтə вəəль'уззəə

Have you considered Lat and ‘Uzza?

وَمَنَوٲةَ ٱلثَّالِثَةَ ٱلْأُخْرَىٰٓ٢٠

вəмəнəəтə c̃c̃əəлиc̃əтəль-ухрōō

and Manat, the third one?

أَلَكُمُ ٱلذَّكَرُ وَلَهُ ٱلْأُنثَىٰ٢١

əлəкуму з̃з̃əкəру вəлəhуль-уӈc̃əə

Are you to have males and He females?

تِلْكَ إِذًا قِسْمَةٌ ضِيزَىٰٓ٢٢

тилькə из̃əн ќисмəтун дыызəə

That, then, will be an unfair division!

إِنْ هِىَ إِلَّآ أَسْمَآءٌ سَمَّيْتُمُوهَآ أَنتُمْ وَءَابَآؤُكُم مَّآ أَنزَلَ ٱللَّهُ بِهَا مِن سُلْطَـٰنٍ‌ۚ إِن يَتَّبِعُونَ إِلَّا ٱلظَّنَّ وَمَا تَهْوَى ٱلْأَنفُسُ‌ۖ وَلَقَدْ جَآءَهُم مِّن رَّبِّهِمُ ٱلْهُدَىٰٓ٢٣

ин hийə ильлəə əсмəə'ун сəммəйтумууhəə əӈтум вə'əəбəə'укум-мəə əӈзəлə ллаhу биhəə миӈ-сульт̣ōōн, ий-йəттəби'уунə ильлəə з̃з̃ōннə вəмəə тəhвəəль-əӈфус, вəлəќōд джəə'əhум-миррōббиhимуль-hудəə

These are but names, which you have coined—you and your fathers—for which Allah has not sent down any authority. They follow nothing but conjectures and the desires of the [lower] soul, while there has already come to them the guidance from their Lord.

أَمْ لِلْإِنسَـٰنِ مَا تَمَنَّىٰ٢٤

əм ли-ль-иӈсəəни мəə тəмəннəə

Shall man have whatever he yearns for?

فَلِلَّهِ ٱلْأَخِرَةُ وَٱلْأُولَىٰ٢٥

фəли-Ллəhиль-'əəхырōту вəəльуулəə

Yet to Allah belong this world and the Hereafter.

وَكَم مِّن مَّلَكٍ فِى ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٲتِ لَا تُغْنِى شَفَـٰعَتُهُمْ شَيْــًٔا إِلَّا مِنۢ بَعْدِ أَن يَأْذَنَ ٱللَّهُ لِمَن يَشَآءُ وَيَرْضَىٰٓ٢٦

вəкəм-мимм-мəлəкин фии ссəмəəвəəти лəə туґнии шəфəə'əтуhум шэй'əн ильлəə мимм-бə'ди əй-йəз̃əнə ллаhу лимəй-йəшəə'у вəйəрдōō

How many an angel there is in the heavens whose intercession is of not any avail, except after Allah permits whomever He wishes and approves of!

إِنَّ ٱلَّذِينَ لَا يُؤْمِنُونَ بِٱلْأَخِرَةِ لَيُسَمُّونَ ٱلْمَلَـٰٓئِكَةَ تَسْمِيَةَ ٱلْأُنثَىٰ٢٧

иннəль-лəз̃иинə лəə йу'минуунə биль-'əəхырōти лəйусəммуунəль-мəлəə'икəтə тəсмийəтəль-уӈc̃əə

Indeed those who do not believe in the Hereafter give female names to the angels.

وَمَا لَهُم بِهِۦ مِنْ عِلْمٍ‌ۖ إِن يَتَّبِعُونَ إِلَّا ٱلظَّنَّ‌ۖ وَإِنَّ ٱلظَّنَّ لَا يُغْنِى مِنَ ٱلْحَقِّ شَيْــًٔا٢٨

вəмəə лəhумм-биhи мин 'ильм, ий-йəттəби'уунə ильлəə з̃з̃ōнн, вəиннə з̃з̃ōннə лəə йуґнии минəль-həќќи шэй'ə

They do not have any knowledge of that. They follow nothing but conjectures, and conjecture is no substitute for the truth.

فَأَعْرِضْ عَن مَّن تَوَلَّىٰ عَن ذِكْرِنَا وَلَمْ يُرِدْ إِلَّا ٱلْحَيَوٲةَ ٱلدُّنْيَا٢٩

фəə'рид 'əмм-мəӈ-тəвəльлəə 'əӈ-з̃икринəə вəлəм йурид ильлəəль-həйəəтə ддунйəə

So avoid those who turn away from Our remembrance and desire nothing but the life of the world.

ذَٲلِكَ مَبْلَغُهُم مِّنَ ٱلْعِلْمِ‌ۚ إِنَّ رَبَّكَ هُوَ أَعْلَمُ بِمَن ضَلَّ عَن سَبِيلِهِۦ وَهُوَ أَعْلَمُ بِمَنِ ٱهْتَدَىٰ٣٠

з̃əəликə мəблəґуhум-минəль-'ильм, иннə рōббəкə hувə ə'лəму бимəӈ-дōльлə 'əӈ-сəбиилиhи вəhувə ə'лəму бимəни-hтəдəə

That is the ultimate reach of their knowledge. Indeed your Lord knows best those who stray from His way, and He knows best those who are [rightly] guided.

وَلِلَّهِ مَا فِى ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٲتِ وَمَا فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ لِيَجْزِىَ ٱلَّذِينَ أَسَـٰٓـــُٔواْ بِمَا عَمِلُواْ وَيَجْزِىَ ٱلَّذِينَ أَحْسَنُواْ بِٱلْحُسْنَى٣١

вəли-Ллəhи мəə фии ссəмəəвəəти вəмəə фииль-əрды лийəджзийə льлəз̃иинə əсəə'уу бимəə 'əмилюю вəйəджзийə льлəз̃иинə əhсəнуу биль-hуснəə

To Allah belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is in the earth, that He may requite those who do evil for what they have done, and reward those who do good with the best [of rewards].

ٱلَّذِينَ يَجْتَنِبُونَ كَبَـٰٓئِرَ ٱلْإِثْمِ وَٱلْفَوَٲحِشَ إِلَّا ٱللَّمَمَ‌ۚ إِنَّ رَبَّكَ وَٲسِعُ ٱلْمَغْفِرَةِ‌ۚ هُوَ أَعْلَمُ بِكُمْ إِذْ أَنشَأَكُم مِّنَ ٱلْأَرْضِ وَإِذْ أَنتُمْ أَجِنَّةٌ فِى بُطُونِ أُمَّهَـٰتِكُمْ‌ۖ فَلَا تُزَكُّوٓاْ أَنفُسَكُمْ‌ۖ هُوَ أَعْلَمُ بِمَنِ ٱتَّقَىٰٓ٣٢

əль-лəз̃иинə йəджтəнибуунə кəбəə'ирōль-иc̃ми вəəльфəвəəhишə ильлəə льлəмəм, иннə рōббəкə вəəси'уль-мəґфирōh, hувə ə'лəму бикум из̃ əӈшəəкум-минəль-əрды вəиз̃ əӈтум əджиннəтун фии бут̣ууни уммəhəəтикум, фəлəə тузəккуу əӈфусəкум, hувə ə'лəму бимəни-ттəќōō

Those who avoid major sins and indecencies, apart from [minor and occasional] lapses. Indeed your Lord is expansive in [His] forgiveness. He knows you best since [the time] He produced you from the earth and since you were foetuses in the bellies of your mothers. So do not flaunt your piety: He knows best those who are Godwary.

أَفَرَءَيْتَ ٱلَّذِى تَوَلَّىٰ٣٣

əфəрōəйтə льлəз̃ии тəвəльлəə

Did you see him who turned away,

وَأَعْطَىٰ قَلِيلاً وَأَكْدَىٰٓ٣٤

вəə'т̣ōō ќōлиилəу-вəəкдəə

gave a little and held off?

أَعِندَهُۥ عِلْمُ ٱلْغَيْبِ فَهُوَ يَرَىٰٓ٣٥

ə'иӈдəhу 'ильмуль-ґōйби фəhувə йəрōō

Does he have the knowledge of the Unseen so that he sees?

أَمْ لَمْ يُنَبَّأْ بِمَا فِى صُحُفِ مُوسَىٰ٣٦

əм лəм йунəббə бимəə фии суhуфи муусəə

Has he not been informed of what is in the scriptures of Moses,

وَإِبْرَٲهِيمَ ٱلَّذِى وَفَّىٰٓ٣٧

вəибрōōhиимə льлəз̃ии вəффəə

and of Abraham, who fulfilled [his summons]:

أَلَّا تَزِرُ وَازِرَةٌ وِزْرَ أُخْرَىٰ٣٨

əльлəə тəзиру вəəзирōтуу-визрō ухрōō

that no bearer shall bear another’s burden,

وَأَن لَّيْسَ لِلْإِنسَـٰنِ إِلَّا مَا سَعَىٰ٣٩

вəль-лэйсə ли-ль-иӈсəəни ильлəə мəə сə'əə

that nothing belongs to man except what he strives for,

وَأَنَّ سَعْيَهُۥ سَوْفَ يُرَىٰ٤٠

вəəннə сə'йəhу сəуфə йурōō

and that he will soon be shown his endeavour,

ثُمَّ يُجْزَٮٰهُ ٱلْجَزَآءَ ٱلْأَوْفَىٰ٤١

c̃уммə йуджзəəhуль-джəзəə'əль-əуфəə

then he will be rewarded for it with the fullest reward;

وَأَنَّ إِلَىٰ رَبِّكَ ٱلْمُنتَهَىٰ٤٢

вəəннə илəə рōббикəль-муӈтəhəə

that the terminus is toward your Lord,

وَأَنَّهُۥ هُوَ أَضْحَكَ وَأَبْكَىٰ٤٣

вəəннəhу hувə əдhəкə вəəбкəə

that it is He who makes [men] laugh, and weep,

وَأَنَّهُۥ هُوَ أَمَاتَ وَأَحْيَا٤٤

вəəннəhу hувə əмəəтə вəəhйəə

that it is He who brings death and gives life,

وَأَنَّهُۥ خَلَقَ ٱلزَّوْجَيْنِ ٱلذَّكَرَ وَٱلْأُنثَىٰ٤٥

вəəннəhу хōлəќō ззəуджəйни з̃з̃əкəрō вəəльуӈc̃əə

that it is He who created the mates, the male and the female,

مِن نُّطْفَةٍ إِذَا تُمْنَىٰ٤٦

мин-нут̣фəтин из̃əə тумнəə

from a drop of [seminal] fluid when emitted;

وَأَنَّ عَلَيْهِ ٱلنَّشْأَةَ ٱلْأُخْرَىٰ٤٧

вəəннə 'əлэйhи ннəшəтəль-ухрōō

that with Him lies the second genesis,

وَأَنَّهُۥ هُوَ أَغْنَىٰ وَأَقْنَىٰ٤٨

вəəннəhу hувə əґнəə вəəќнəə

that it is He who enriches and grants possessions,

وَأَنَّهُۥ هُوَ رَبُّ ٱلشِّعْرَىٰ٤٩

вəəннəhу hувə рōббу шши'рōō

that it is He who is the Lord of Sirius;

وَأَنَّهُۥٓ أَهْلَكَ عَادًا ٱلْأُولَىٰ٥٠

вəəннəhу əhлəкə 'əəдəнль-уулəə

that it is He who destroyed the former ‘Ad,

وَثَمُودَاْ فَمَآ أَبْقَىٰ٥١

вəc̃əмуудə фəмəə əбќōō

and Thamud, sparing none [of them];

وَقَوْمَ نُوحٍ مِّن قَبْلُ‌ۖ إِنَّهُمْ كَانُواْ هُمْ أَظْلَمَ وَأَطْغَىٰ٥٢

вəќōумə нууhимм-миӈ-ќōбль, иннəhум кəəнуу hум əз̃лəмə вəəт̣ґōō

and the people of Noah before that; indeed they were more unjust and rebellious;

وَٱلْمُؤْتَفِكَةَ أَهْوَىٰ٥٣

вəəльму'тəфикəтə əhвəə

and He overthrew the town that was overturned,

فَغَشَّـٰهَا مَا غَشَّىٰ٥٤

фəґōшшəəhəə мəə ґōшшəə

covering it with what covered it.

فَبِأَىِّ ءَالَآءِ رَبِّكَ تَتَمَارَىٰ٥٥

фəбиəййи əəлəə'и рōббикə тəтəмəəрōō

Then which of the bounties of your Lord will you dispute?

هَـٰذَا نَذِيرٌ مِّنَ ٱلنُّذُرِ ٱلْأُولَىٰٓ٥٦

həəз̃əə нəз̃иирумм-минə ннуз̃уриль-уулəə

This is a warner, [in the tradition] of the warners of old.

أَزِفَتِ ٱلْأَزِفَةُ٥٧

əзифəтиль-'əəзифəh

The Imminent [Hour] is near at hand.

لَيْسَ لَهَا مِن دُونِ ٱللَّهِ كَاشِفَةٌ٥٨

лэйсə лəhəə миӈ-дууни льлəhи кəəшифəh

There is none who may unveil it besides Allah.

أَفَمِنْ هَـٰذَا ٱلْحَدِيثِ تَعْجَبُونَ٥٩

əфəмин həəз̃əəль-həдииc̃и тə'джəбуун

Will you then wonder at this discourse,

وَتَضْحَكُونَ وَلَا تَبْكُونَ٦٠

вəтəдhəкуунə вəлəə тəбкуун

and laugh and not weep,

وَأَنتُمْ سَـٰمِدُونَ٦١

вəəӈтум сəəмидуун

while you remain heedless?!

فَٱسْجُدُواْ لِلَّهِ وَٱعْبُدُواْ٦٢

фəəсджудуу ли-Ллəhи вəə'будуу

So prostrate yourselves to Allah and worship Him!
