Fajr (Dawn)

  • بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَـٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ

    бисмиль-лəhир-рōhмəəнир-рōhиим

    In the Name of Allah, the All-beneficent, the All-merciful.
  • 89:1

    وَالْفَجْرِ

    вəəльфəджр

    By the Dawn,
  • 89:2

    وَلَيَالٍ عَشْرٍ

    вəлəйəəлин 'əшр

    by the ten nights,
  • 89:3

    وَالشَّفْعِ وَالْوَتْرِ

    вəш-шəф'и вəəльвəтр

    by the Even and the Odd,
  • 89:4

    وَاللَّيْلِ إِذَا يَسْرِ

    вəль-лэйли из̃əə йəср

    by the night when it departs!
  • 89:5

    هَلْ فِي ذَ‌ٰلِكَ قَسَمٌ لِّذِي حِجْرٍ

    həль фии з̃əəликə ќōсəмул-лиз̃ии hиджр

    Is there an oath in that for one possessing intellect?
  • 89:6

    أَلَمْ تَرَ كَيْفَ فَعَلَ رَبُّكَ بِعَادٍ

    əлəм тəрō кəйфə фə'əлə рōббукə би'əəд

    Have you not regarded how your Lord dealt with [the people of] ‘Ad,
  • 89:7

    إِرَمَ ذَاتِ الْعِمَادِ

    ирōмə з̃əəтиль-'имəəд

    [and] Iram, [the city] of the pillars,
  • 89:8

    الَّتِي لَمْ يُخْلَقْ مِثْلُهَا فِي الْبِلَادِ

    əльлəтии лəм йухлəќ миc̃люhəə фииль-билəəд

    the like of which was not created among cities,
  • 89:9

    وَثَمُودَ الَّذِينَ جَابُوا الصَّخْرَ بِالْوَادِ

    вəc̃əмуудəль-лəз̃иинə джəəбуус-сōхрō би-ль-вəəд

    and [the people of] Thamud, who hollowed out the rocks in the valley,
  • 89:10

    وَفِرْعَوْنَ ذِي الْأَوْتَادِ

    вəфир'əунə з̃ииль-əутəəд

    and Pharaoh, the impaler
  • 89:11

    الَّذِينَ طَغَوْا فِي الْبِلَادِ

    əльлəз̃иинə тōґōу фииль-билəəд

    —those who rebelled [against Allah] in their cities
  • 89:12

    فَأَكْثَرُوا فِيهَا الْفَسَادَ

    фə`əкc̃əруу фииhəəль-фəсəəд

    and caused much corruption in them,
  • 89:13

    فَصَبَّ عَلَيْهِمْ رَبُّكَ سَوْطَ عَذَابٍ

    фəсōббə 'əлэйhим рōббукə сəутō 'əз̃əəб

    so your Lord poured on them lashes of punishment.
  • 89:14

    إِنَّ رَبَّكَ لَبِالْمِرْصَادِ

    иннə рōббəкə лəби-ль-мирсōōд

    Indeed your Lord is in ambush.
  • 89:15

    فَأَمَّا الْإِنسَانُ إِذَا مَا ابْتَلَاهُ رَبُّهُ فَأَكْرَمَهُ وَنَعَّمَهُ فَيَقُولُ رَبِّي أَكْرَمَنِ

    фə`əммəəль-иŋŋсəəну из̃əə мəə-бтəлəəhу рōббуhу фə`əкрōмəhу вəнə''əмəhу фəйəќуулю рōббии əкрōмəн

    As for man, whenever his Lord tests him, and grants him honour, and blesses him, he says, ‘My Lord has honoured me.’
  • 89:16

    وَأَمَّا إِذَا مَا ابْتَلَاهُ فَقَدَرَ عَلَيْهِ رِزْقَهُ فَيَقُولُ رَبِّي أَهَانَنِ

    вə`əммəə из̃əə мəə-бтəлəəhу фəќōдəрō 'əлэйhи ризќōhу фəйəќуулю рōббии əhəəнəн

    But when He tests him and tightens for him his provision, he says, ‘My Lord has humiliated me.’
  • 89:17

    كَلَّا  ۖ بَل لَّا تُكْرِمُونَ الْيَتِيمَ

    кəльлəə, бəль-лəə тукримуунəль-йəтиим

    No indeed! No, you do not honour the orphan,
  • 89:18

    وَلَا تَحَاضُّونَ عَلَىٰ طَعَامِ الْمِسْكِينِ

    вəлəə тəhəəддуунə 'əлəə тō'əəмиль-мискиин

    and do not urge the feeding of the needy.
  • 89:19

    وَتَأْكُلُونَ التُّرَاثَ أَكْلًا لَّمًّا

    вəтə`кулююнəт-турōōc̃ə əклəль-лəммə

    You eat the inheritance rapaciously,
  • 89:20

    وَتُحِبُّونَ الْمَالَ حُبًّا جَمًّا

    вəтуhиббуунəль-мəəлə hуббəн джəммə

    and love wealth with much fondness.
